Mythbusters!
We had an awesome week of camp this year for Griffies/Myers session at CFBC! The session is an “open” session that drew campers from several towns in the central Florida area, but the majority of the campers were from the immediate Lakeland area. Staff members were from several towns as well, but the vast majority were from the Highlands congregation in Lakeland. And I have to give a huge shout-out to the teens of Highlands: we had our largest group of teen-aged counselors to date and they did an incredible job! Given the fact that our session camper ages are 9-15 years old, we have the opportunity to utilize older teenagers in the counselor role. It’s a really cool thing to be able to see kids who have grown up going to our session transition to the counselor role and do an amazing job mentoring their campers!
Our theme for the week was “Mythbusters!” Randal Myers took the lead on teaching our bible classes each day. Each day’s lesson began with an impromptu drama performance by select campers which would set the stage for the lesson. Also, each lesson centered on some story from the Bible that, on the surface, might seem impossible but later proved to be very possible because God was able to do His grand work through the character(s) of the story. Guys like David and Gideon were featured throughout the week in our Bible story time.
Camp games and activities are always a highlight of the week, and this year was no exception! Keith Walmsley stepped up once again to be our Activities Guru and did a great job organizing full-camp games like “Capture the Flag” and an annual favorite, “Polish Baseball”! We also had several guys step in throughout the week to organize basketball tourneys or kickball matches. One other vital aspect of our session each year is craft time, and we believe we have two of the greatest arts and crafts ladies anyone could ask for: Becky Allen and Thea Moser! Becky and Thea do a masterful job of organizing great crafts for the campers to put together and then take home at the end of the week. We owe a great deal to these two wonderful ladies! One new addition to the activities this year was Paintball! We had several campers who took advantage of this new offering this year and were really impressed with the course (Thanks, Ron and CFBC for making this available to everyone!).
Finally, the single greatest time of the session was Thursday evening when we had the privilege of adding another soul to the Kingdom! It’s always a thrill to be able to help someone in their decision to dedicate their life to God! Also, as a direct result of this camp session, we’re anticipating another baptism in the near-future back home in Lakeland! Praise God for the ministry that CFBC is to so many people!
